Collapse
The relationship has failed.
A Developmental Framework
for Relationships
Every marriage moves.
The direction is up to you.
A Continuum, Not a Destination
The Marriage Continuum describes eleven positions that every relationship moves through.
It’s not a label — it’s a map. Understanding where you are helps you know what’s needed to move forward.

Movement Creates Change
The continuum runs from 0 (Collapse) to 10 (Unity).
Movement toward 0 is increasingly self-protective and disconnected.
Movement toward 10 is increasingly connected and unified.
The midpoint — 5 (Acceptance) — is where real developmental work begins. At this stage, both partners are willing to see the reality of the relationship and take responsibility for their part, which creates the possibility for growth.
The Eleven Positions
The relationship has failed.
Hostility, contempt and opposition.
Emotional withdrawal and self-preservation.
Little understanding, regular disputes and conflict.
Living parallel lives with surface-level interaction.
Letting go of judgment, increased differentiation.
Intentional time and deliberate conversation.
Growing trust and shared direction.
A strong sense of partnership and collaboration.
Greater awareness and resonance.
Radical openness, safety, structural trust.
It’s About Movement, Not Labels
The Marriage Continuum is not a personality test and it’s not a permanent label. It simply describes the current pattern in your relationship and gives you a language for what’s needed next.
“The goal is not to identify where your marriage is and stay there. The goal is to understand what movement requires.”
